WOMEN’S HEALTH

Axis Medical Center emphasizes the importance of culturally-appropriate care for women’s health. Women have unique health issues. Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, conditions of the female organs, and cancers that uniquely affect women require specialized medical expertise. Even health issues that affect both men and women can affect women differently.

Reasons to visit a women’s health provider include treatment for irregular periods, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), vaginal infections, and a discussion about contraceptive methods. Ask your provider about the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine if you are between ages 18 to 26 and you have not received the HPV vaccine in the past, or have not completed the full vaccine series.

Women can have a healthy pregnancy by getting early and regular prenatal care. They should also get recommended breast cancer, cervical cancer and bone density screenings. Your provider can give you information about how to conduct a monthly breast self-exam. If you notice a change in your breasts, whether or not you do breast self-exams, you should contact your provider right away.

Regularly scheduled screening:

  • Yearly mammograms are recommended for most women over age 45.
  • If you have a family history of breast cancer, your mammograms should begin earlier than the age at which your youngest family member was diagnosed.
  • If you have other risk factors for breast cancer, your provider may also recommend a breast ultrasound, or MRI scan.
  • Beginning at age 21, women should have a pelvic exam and pap smear every 3 years to check for cervical cancer.
  • If you are over age 30 and your Pap smear and HPV test are normal, you only need a Pap smear every 5 years.
  • Women who are sexually active should be screened for chlamydia and gonorrhea up until age 25. Women older than 25 should be screened only if at high risk.
  • Your provider can tell you how to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Your provider may ask you about alcohol and tobacco use and may ask you about symptoms of depression.

In order to maintain good reproductive, sexual, and overall health, Women should schedule an office visit once a year.
