According to the UN public health agency, 1 in 5 children are not receiving routine vaccines that could avert 1.5 million deaths a year due to preventable diseases. Part of the problem stems from rumors, now thoroughly disproven, that vaccines cause autism. This disinformation has resulted in increased measles and pertussis outbreaks in the US, and more specifically in Minnesota in recent years.
The CDC recommends that children from birth to 18 years old follow a vaccine schedule to stay up to date on their vaccinations, prevent illness, and protect people in their community.
Axis can work with your family to keep your children on track by scheduling each of them a well-child check with one of our providers. We will keep track of their vaccinations, height, weight, and any other health concerns you may have.
All childhood vaccines are free and will not cost anything to the family, though there may be other costs associated with your visit.
Vaccines are not only for children. According to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adult vaccination coverage in the US remains low. A recent study revealed that only 20% of adults at high risk of pneumonia received the pneumococcal vaccine, while only 64.2% were vaccinated against tetanus and 14.2% against diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). Such low immunization coverage is a huge concern for public health because 30,000 people in the US die from vaccine-preventable diseases every year, and more than 95% of these deaths are among adults.
The CDC recommend that all adults are vaccinated against influenza (seasonal flu) every year. This vaccine is particularly important for those more susceptible to serious flu-related complications, such as pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions and older adults.
All adults should receive the one-off Tdap vaccine, and a booster should be administered every 10 years. The Tdap vaccine should also be given to women every time they are pregnant.
